Burke Northern Virginia Information and Highlights

What else could be more beautiful than looking at leaf reflections of different shades of mustard, orange, and green in clear blue water of Burke Lake?

Burke is one of the few American neighborhoods which still witness a colorful sky during winter evenings and welcome birds migrating from other regions during extreme winters. The beauty of this piece of land lies in its very well-planned infrastructure and fun-filled recreational parks. Burke also has a very important part in the history of Virginia. Let’s have a look.

History

From 1796-1854, Burke was included in Fairfax county with the name Silas Burke. In 1824, a farmer, local politician and merchant constructed a house on Pochik Creek. This house is still visited by the tourists.

In 1940s, when the railroad and Burke station were constructed, people started migrating from surrounding areas to this neighborhood. During the American Civil War, this railroad was among the most used railroads of America.

In 1903, Henry C. changed the name of Burke Station Post Office to Burke Post Office. Henry, a non-governmental employee was popularly known as The Pie King. His factory was located in Georgetown. In 1914, his factory’s daily pie production was 50,000 pies a day. As Henry’s pies became more popular, people from all over the country started visiting Burke. Soon, Burke became a social hub and summer hideout for the American people.

Due to increased tourism, it also became a center for motorcycle races, horse races, marathons, and fairs and exhibitions of boxing and baseball, which led to the construction of several hotels, restaurants, and parks.

Location

Located at an area of 11.6 square-miles, Burke contains numerous small ponds and lakes. Almost 0.1 square-miles of its area contains water. It has a population of around 60,000 people from mixed communities. The neighborhood has non-hispanic white majority. Other popular communities include non-hispanic African Americans and non-hispanic Asians.

Weather

Burke is popularly known for its pleasant and soothing climate throughout the year. December, January, and February are the coolest months with average temperatures around 48F to 55F. The highest temperatures are recorded from June to October ranging from 75F to 89F. As summers are long, snowfall is very rare in Burke but rainfall is commonly witnessed.
