Before 19th century, Ashburn was known as Farmwell. George Lee, an Englishman had inherited 1,236 acre of land from his father. As it was a popular plantation site with rich soil, it was named as Farmwell.
In 1841, John Janney purchased a section of around 580 acres of Farmwell. The location now makes the western part of Ashburn road. He named it Ashburn property. Later in 1890, the land was sold out but the name was retained.
Farmwell was home to some important places which make important historical destination of Ashburn today including Janelia and the Belmont Manor House. The National Register of Historic Places lists both these places.
