Alexandria, or otherwise known as the City of Alexandria, is a city located in Northern Virginia. The city is about 11 km (7 miles) south of the downtown Washington, DC area. It is situated along the western bank of the River of Potomac. As of 2014, the population of this city was estimated to be above 150,000.
Similarly to the other areas in Northern Virginia and Maryland, the modern parts of Alexandria have been shaped by their proximity to the capital. The city is largely populated by the professionals who work in the US military, the federal civil service, or for one of the several private entities that contract to distribute offerings to the federal government.
Then called the English Colony of Virginia, the initial European Settlement got established here in the year 1695. The town didn’t get incorporated until the late 1700s. In fact, in the year 1791, Alexandria got included in the land to be the District of Columbia, as decided by George Washington. What’s more, the city of Alexandria had to remain under the occupation of the military up until the Civil War’s end. By the late 20th century, the city had established itself as a key area for the urban agglomeration in Northern Virginia.
As per the US Census Bureau, the total area of the city is 40.1 km2 out of which 1.1 km2 is water while 38.9 km2 is land. The city of Alexandria remains bounded by Fairfax County to the south, Arlington County to the northwest and north, as well as the Potomac River to the east.
The city of Alexandria experiences a warm humid temperature climate with no dry season and hot summers. Throughout the span of a single year, the temperature generally varies between -2°C and 31°C and is hardly under -8°C or above 35°C. What’s more, the city gets about 44 inches of rain on a yearly basis. On average, the snowfall is 7 inches a year.
